How to Estimate Mini-Split Battery Runtime

Battery runtime is not a fixed product specification. It changes with the building load, outdoor conditions, thermostat settings, equipment modulation, battery limits, inverter efficiency, and every other load sharing the system.

Separate power from energy

Power is an instantaneous rate. Energy accumulates over time. A planning estimate multiplies an assumed average input by operating time, then accounts for conversion losses and reserve. Label every assumption and show the arithmetic.

Use a complete energy budget

  • Heating and cooling load for the building and climate.
  • Verified or measured equipment behavior under relevant conditions.
  • Expected operating schedule and duty cycle.
  • Usable battery energy at the intended temperature and discharge limits.
  • Inverter continuous and transient capability, conversion losses, and standby draw.
  • Solar or generator recharge, weather variability, other site loads, and reserve margin.

Treat the result as an estimate

A runtime calculator is useful for comparing scenarios, not proving compatibility. Validate the final battery, inverter, protection, wiring, generation, and mechanical design for the exact site.
