Practical help for your space

How Do You Choose HVAC for a Cargo Trailer?

A cargo trailer can gain heat quickly through its metal skin and roof. Open doors, people, tools, cooking equipment, electronics, and ventilation can add even more. A little advice for this kind of space

What usually matters most?

Compare rooftop and wall-mounted systems around travel, structure, heat gain, open doors, equipment, ventilation, and available power.

A rooftop RV heat pump can suit a moving trailer when the roof and interior air path are compatible. A wall-mounted mini split may suit a mostly parked conversion with protected equipment and lines.

Include sun, insulation, air leakage, doors, people, tools, cooking, ventilation, work hours, travel, shore power, generator or inverter capacity, batteries, charging, and other loads.

One important reminder

Use these guides to compare the equipment type and ask better questions. The finished space or vehicle still determines the heating and cooling load.

Before ordering, confirm the exact equipment, roof or wall fit, electrical work, mounting, drainage, controls, and complete power setup.

What should you work out first?

These four questions will save you from comparing systems that do not fit the space, route, or power you actually have.

  1. How much heating and cooling does the space need?A proper load calculation looks at the weather, insulation, windows, air leaks, people, and equipment so you do not choose the wrong size.
  2. What does this mini split need?Check its operating temperature range, circuit, dimensions, clearances, and installation instructions.
  3. Can your power source support it?Look at the circuit, inverter, batteries, generator, solar charging, other loads, and extra power kept available together.
  4. Where will everything go?Plan both units, airflow, drainage, the line-set route, service access, permits, and any professional help you need.
