An Off-Grid HVAC Power-Planning Checklist
To plan an off-grid mini split, you need to look at three things together: the building, the exact HVAC equipment, and the complete power system. A single wattage or runtime estimate can't tell you whether everything will work.
What does the building need?
- Calculate the heating and cooling load for the location and construction.
- Account for climate, insulation, windows, air leakage, ventilation, occupancy, and internal heat.
- Decide when the building will be occupied and whether the mini split is primary or supplemental heat.
What does the mini split require?
- Use the current manuals for the exact indoor and outdoor models.
- Check circuit requirements, operating limits, controls, and performance data that apply to your conditions.
- If an important specification is missing or two documents disagree, get it confirmed before designing around it.
Can the power system support it?
- Estimate daily energy use with clear assumptions about operating time and average load.
- Check the inverter's continuous and short-duration limits, battery current limits, usable storage, temperature effects, conversion losses, and standby draw.
- Include solar or generator charging, weather changes, other loads, and a practical reserve.
- Confirm wiring, overcurrent protection, transfer equipment, grounding, bonding, and local requirements.
What might this look like in practice?
A cabin may have enough solar production on a clear afternoon but not enough stored energy for a cold night. Looking at daily generation alone can hide that problem, so check the worst realistic operating period and keep reserve capacity for other essential loads.
