How to Plan a 115V Mini-Split Circuit
A 115V mini split does not automatically belong on a nearby receptacle, an extension cord, or an existing general-purpose circuit. The circuit must be planned for the exact indoor and outdoor equipment.
Which electrical details matter?
- Nominal voltage, phase, and frequency.
- Minimum circuit ampacity for each component when the manufacturer lists them separately.
- Maximum overcurrent protection or the maximum fuse or breaker value.
- The required power-connection location and field-wiring method.
What else has to be checked?
The installation also needs the right conductors, overcurrent protection, disconnect, grounding and bonding, routing, weather protection, and equipment clearances. If you're using an inverter or generator, it must be checked as part of the same design. Never size the circuit from cooling capacity or voltage alone.
